You do have to know some basic things before you can really benefit of the power of WordPress, wether you use it as a blog, or as a CMS fort your website.
First thing you have to keep in mind when you open you dashboard is if you want to write a post or a page since that is a big difference.

Posts will appear on your website in a chronological order, pages on the other hand can be sorted and put under other pages as subpages.

A post will belong to a certain category, pages don’t (except with a special plugin).
Post will also belong to archives like monthely archives, tag archives, author archives and categorie archives.

Pages, well they are just that, pages…. which is great for using it as a Content Management System and if you Build a website with WordPress.

So in short, Posts are in the Timeline and great for news items and online, Pages or great for static information and can be used for more static website.

Most people will tell you that WordPress is for Blogging, wich is true, but not the only way you can use it.

For me, WordPress it the best blogging tool you can get for free but you can also use it to build lightning fast websites…

WordPress functionality can be greatly extended by using Plugins, little programs that can help you with specific functions like special comments forms or improvements for you search engine ranking.
For some of these plugins I will show you why you need them and how to use them.

Theming WordPress means you can very easily get a different look and feel for your Blog or webiste, there are lots of free WordPress themes avaiable and af course there are themes you can buy.

I will show you what to look for in a theme and how you can tweak it to get a better perfomance or how to get that functions you wanted into the code so it really works.

As for the main part of this site I will focus on showing you how to use WordPress to write posts (time dated articles) and pages and take you through some setting to really get the most out of your installation.

If you are completely new to this blogging thing, you could start out with a free account at www.wordpress.com and try the backend of this software for free.

P.s. If you are more into Video instructions you could checkout WordPressTutorials.com who offer a decent priced membership based website with lots of informational videos.

For me, screenshots like I am using here work better because you can replicate the steps on your own pace. But I must addmit the video’s do go a lot deeper into the matter than I will do here.

Extensions mean that they add extra functionality to your WordPress based website or Blog.

WordPress Plugins can be found on the main WordPress website http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ where you can find nearly up to 4000 ! plugins.

There are plugins that can create a Gallery for you, my favorite is the Nextgen Gallery and there are plugins to further improve your WordPress site.
If you are in need of a plgin for a special task you should start there.
Why? Becouse it is the main repository of Plugins and the can only be hosted in thet directory if the are truly GPL based, which means that you might alter them for you own specifieck needs if you wan to do so af course…
